The Hifumi En Society has established these scholarship in the name of Denny and Thelma Yasuhara, who did so much to defend our rights as American citizens, aswell as provide for the well being of our Japanese community. Click here to read their story.

The Hifumi En Scholarship

This scholarship was established to honor Denny and Thelma Yasuhara who gave so much of their time and talents for the Issei, Nisei and Sansei(First, Second and Third) generation by standing up their human and civil rights, and makingSpokane a better place for all Japanese Americans. After we sold the Hifumi En Apartments in 2003, we had Spokane JACL administer our $1,000.00 Hifumi En Scholarship every year until 2024. Through the years we have increased our Hifumi En Scholarships to a total of $10,000.00.

In 2016, we awarded $5,000.00 to Derek Iishi, $1,000.00 to Peter Miyoshi. Another $4,000.00 is available to Michaela Marinos, when she continues her education. In 2017, we awarded $4,500.00 to Derek Iishi, $3,000.00 to Jordan Gazaway, and $2,500.00 to Brandon Benoit.

For Japanese descendents and/or those who are actively engaged with the Japanese community in the region. This is open to High School graduates and people in higher education to further their education/technical skills. Please click here for the application.

The “Denny and Thelma Yasuhara” Scholarship

In 2016, the Hifumi En Board partnered with INWCF to provideanother Scholarship for High School graduates and people in higher education to further their education/technical skills. Our $25,000.00 Grant will insure this scholarship will be availableforever! Presently, we are making additional contributions, so we can award largerscholarships. Please check the INWCF website to see how much is available to be awarded.

In 2017, we awarded $4,000.00 to Brandon Benoit, $4,000.00 to Shay McIntyre, $2,000.00 to Aspen Dillabough.

Open to Japanese Americans, and all who have interest, and support the Japanese community in the Greater Inland Empire region.
